During this dead period of the NFL season I thought it would be fun to look back at the tremendous 2015 season that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown had as it relates to the targeted passes that he didn’t manage to catch. This series, however, should not be viewed as me nit-picking Brown as instead I hope to show what a reliable pass catcher he is as it relates to catchable and non-catchable balls thrown his direction.
The Steelers Sunday night game against the Indianapolis Colts was certainly a memorable one for Brown as the wide receiver caught 8 passes for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The two players, however, failed to connect on three other throws during the game and below is a look at those plays.
Late in the first quarter, Roethlisberger looked to connect with Brown in the end zone with a back shoulder throw while Colts cornerback Vontae Davis had other ideas. While Brown and Davis had quite a bit a jostling prior to the football arriving, the latter definitely got away with a jersey pull as you can see in the picture at the top of this post. Brown wanted a call but didn’t get it.
The second misconnect between Brown and Roethlisberger in this game came on a 1st and 10 play with 8:26 left in the first half. On this play, the Roethlisberger pass never makes it past the line of scrimmage as a Colts defensive lineman is able to knock it down.
With 8:01 left in the third quarter, Roethlisberger again failed to connect with Brown only this time it was on a deep pass down the right side against bump and run coverage. It almost looks like a free play at the start, but that wasn’t the case and the throw from Roethlisberger ultimately landed way out of bounds.
While everyone will remember the great punt return for a touchdown that Brown had against the Colts, don’t forget about this magnificent late third quarter catch that he had in the game.
