The Divisional Round of the 2011-2012 playoffs are now in the books and the TOX stat did not let us down this week as the winning teams all had a plus 2 TOX number or better.
The Baltimore Ravens let the Houston Texans beat themselves with the 4 turnovers and the Ravens defense allowed just 1 explosive play which was a 28 yard run by Arian Foster. Texans quarterback T.J. Yates could not stretch the field and made several ill-advised throws deep. The Texans were still in this game up until the end, but could never make the big play when they needed it.
The New York Giants used a good balance of explosive plays and turnovers to take care of the Green Bay Packers. The Giants defense only allowed Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers 1 explosive play through the air and just 1 on the ground. Throw in the 4 turnovers and a few drops by the Packers and the Giants got the win on the road.
The San Francisco 49ers used some hard hitting early to set the tone and were plus 4 in the turnover column against the New Orleans Saints. 49ers quarterback Alex Smith was also able to hit for 3 explosive plays through the air and 1 with his legs and he only turned the ball over once. They converted 3 of the Saints 5 turnovers into 13 points.
The New England Patriots did what the Pittsburgh Steelers could not the week before as they held Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow to just 1 explosive play on his 9 completions and sacked him 5 times. The Patriots lost the turnover battle by 1, but easily made it up with 5 explosive plays of their own and were 5 of 6 in the redzone.
The AFC Championship game will feature the Patriots hosting the Ravens and the NFC Championship game has the 49ers hosting the Giants.
