After writing about why I think the Steelers should do their best to trade out of the 1st round of the 2011 NFL draft that begins Thursday night, I was curious to the value that Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert has gotten in pick for pick trades since he took over in 2000. I have written about the trading history of Colbert this past offseason and have taken those trades listed there and applied the NFL draft pick value chart to them in the data below.
As you can see, Colbert has done a great job trading picks for picks and only once, in 2001, did he not gain value in trading down. In that deal though, the Steelers were able to get the man they were targeting in Casey Hampton and picked up 2 additional picks in the process.
Colbert has done a very good job in addition when trading up, especially in 2003 when he not only gained 21.3% value, but also got Troy Polamalu with the pick. Also in his 5 trades up, he has never given up more than 3.87% in trade value.
Should the Steelers trade down Thursday night, I expect that Colbert will once again only do so if he gets comparable value and he will not just give the pick away. Colbert sits in the driver seat as the Steelers will likely not initiate the action with multiple teams likely trying to move up.
