Player: WR Scotty Miller
Stock Value: Up
Reasoning: Don’t look now, but here comes WR Scotty Miller, surging to push for a roster spot. Following a strong training camp, he stepped up for the Steelers in the first preseason game. On top of that, he capped Latrobe with two more strong practices. Already, we see the roster predictions shifting to include his name.
Before training camp, you would see a lot of Steelers 53-man roster predictions with six wide receivers, none of them named Scotty Miller. Now, you’re likely to see predictions with as few as five receivers—and Miller on them. That includes mine, and credit where it’s due.
Miller has worked hard this offseason after facing some adversity last season, the Steelers even cutting him at one point. It helps that he appears to have a rapport with QB Aaron Rodgers—and also that he is one of the fastest players on the team.
In the Steelers’ preseason opener, Scotty Miller tied for the lead with four receptions, going for 47 yards. Only WR Ke’Shawn Williams on the Steelers had more yards. And that performance in-stadium is merely an extension of what he showed in training camp.
If you followed Alex Kozora’s training camp diary, you saw his name come up regularly. In the two practices since the Steelers’ first preseason game, he has only picked up steam. While he won’t fool anyone into seeing him as the next Cooper Kupp, he is in the mix for a role.
At wide receiver, the Steelers have DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, and Roman Wilson as firm roster locks. Ben Skowronek seems to be close to a lock as well, especially for special teams. Then it’s down to Scotty Miller and Robert Woods, along with a host of less decorated receivers.
Miller has been in the NFL since 2019, a former sixth-round pick. He has 90 career receptions for 1,154 yards and six touchdowns, plus a Super Bowl title with Tom Brady. He had a big 39-yard touchdown catch against Aaron Rodgers’ Packers in the conference finals to help eliminate Green Bay. Now he wants to help Rodgers win his second Super Bowl—the first coming over the Steelers.
With training camp underway and the Steelers exploring their new roster, it’s once again time to “take stock”. It took a while, but we finally saw some of that change the team talked about after the season ended. Certainly, the move to trade for WR DK Metcalf qualifies as a change, not to mention the accompanying contract. Oh, and they also traded some guy named George Pickens, which people found significant.
As we speak, we are in the process of learning what this Steelers team is going to look like. The dust is settled on both free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft, and now we’re in camp. What other moves might the team make, perhaps unexpected acquisitions or departures? They’ve certainly made a flurry of moves, though some question whether they make much difference. This is a Steelers team starving for postseason success, but how desperate are they for a playoff win in 2025?
