The Washington Commanders announced that they’ve signed OT Trent Scott, who served as backup tackle depth with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year.
Scott signed a one-year deal with the Steelers last May, reuniting with OL Coach Pat Meyer, who coached him in Los Angeles and Carolina. Scott managed to dress for all 17 games this past season but played just 31 offensive snaps. Most of those came with him tackle eligible as part of six offensive linemen on the field. He also had one special-teams snap in 2022 if you are scoring at home. For what Scott was asked to do in the 31 offensive snaps that he played in 2022, he did fine.
Here was our training camp report on Scott last summer, his play earning a C- grade.
“Scott’s never been a guy I’ve been enthused about. But he’s been coached by Meyer his whole NFL career with the Chargers, Panthers, and now following him to the Steelers. He’s a poor athlete who struggles mightily with speed rushers and is someone who is going to get his quarterback hit. A lot. Scott had a rough outing in the opener but to his credit, improved in the second game versus Jacksonville. He’s one of the few linemen on this team comfortable with Meyer’s system because he’s been in it so long. He works independent hands, he gets the system, and he had a couple of positive moments because of it. Put it this way – Scott’s hands are better than his feet. With his familiarity, I could see him sticking around the Steelers have given him lots of playing time this summer, even splitting first-team reps with Joe Haeg during the one day Okorafor missed practice. But if he gets into a game, look out.”
Pittsburgh has absolutely zero tackle depth behind starters Dan Moore Jr. and Chukwuma Okorafor. The team will add in free agency, the draft, or both, and having a veteran with versatility would be important. The Steelers have spent the offseason beefing up its interior offensive line, signing guards Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig.
In addition to Scott, free agents the Steelers lost this offseason include CB Cam Sutton to Detroit, LB Devin Bush to Seattle, and LB Malik Reed to Miami. Notable players who remain free agents include TE Zach Gentry, QB Mason Rudolph, and DL Chris Wormley.
