The Pittsburgh Steelers made one transaction on Monday and it included quarterback Taryn Christion being released from the practice squad.
The Steelers signed Christion to their practice squad last Tuesday and he spent the week serving as the team’s scout team quarterback and in essence was best attempting to imitate Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
In the Steelers Sunday home loss, Jackson rushed 14 times for 70 yards with a long of 9 yards. Five of those runs were scored as scrambles. As a passer, Jackson was 19 of 28 for 161 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
While Christion is off the the Steelers practice squad as of Monday, there’s a chance he might be back in future weeks depending on the Steelers week-to-week opponent. Maybe even in Week 9 as that’s when the Steelers play the Indianapolis Colts and their mobile quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Later in the season the Steelers might also need Christion when they prepare to play the Arizona Cardinals and again in Week 17 when they prepare to close out their regular season against the Ravens.
The Steelers still have quarterback Paxton Lynch on their practice squad and he might get promoted to the team’s 53-man roster sometime by Saturday afternoon if starting quarterback Mason Rudolph can’t play Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.
On Tuesday, the Steelers will likely sign a player to fill the open spot on their practice squad. Linebacker Robert Spillane could be the player added to replace Christion.
