Happy Friday to yinz and welcome to another exciting weekend full of football.
I hope yinz had a great week despite the Pittsburgh Steelers losing at home to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. The 1-4 Steelers will now look to beat the Los Angeles Chargers on national television Sunday night with a rookie undrafted free agent quarterback who wasn’t even on the team’s 53-man roster or practice squad to start the 2019 regular season. There are a lot of people rooting for the Samford product and should he beat the Chargers Sunday night he’s sure to reach folk here status in Pittsburgh.
With the Steelers game on Sunday night, we’ll be able to sit back and watch quite a few other Week 6 games on Sunday and the action starts earlier this week thanks to there being a game in London.
As usual, I have five questions for yinz to answer between now and the Sunday night kickoff of the game between the Steelers and Chargers and they are below. Have a great weekend and we look forward to keeping all of yinz entertained with great pregame content the next several days. Thanks to all who visited the site this past week.
1 – Steelers rookie running back Benny Snell Jr. ran a little bit of the Wildcat during his college career at Kentucky. Will he take at least one direct snap Sunday night against the Chargers?
2 – True or false: Steelers wide receiver Ryan Switzer, the team’s emergency quarterback, will attempt at least one pass Sunday night against the Chargers.
3 – How many catches will Steelers wide receiver Donte Moncrief have Sunday night against the Chargers?
4 – True or false: Guard Fred Johnson, who was waived on Friday by the Steelers, will be back on either the team’s practice squad or 53-man roster by 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
5 – How many touchdown passes will Steelers rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges throw Sunday night against the Chargers?
Recap of 2019 NFL Week 5 Friday Night 5 Questions
Question 1: Jaylen Samuels’ first pass went 4 yards beyond the line of scrimmage before being intercepted by Josh Bynes at Pittsburgh’s 16-yard line. Only 21.5% of Steelers Depot respondents correctly predicted that Samuels would throw a pass beyond the line of scrimmage.
Question 2: Mason Rudolph completed a short pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster who avoided a tackle and rumbled into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown in the first quarter of play. Unfortunately, Rudolph was knocked out of the game during the Steelers first possession of the second half, so he ended up with just one touchdown pass versus the Ravens. Respondent’s predictions ranged from 1-4 touchdown passes with the median response of 2. In fact, 61.5% predicted Rudolph throwing two TD passes. Only 23.1% correctly predicted just one TD pass completed by Rudolph.
Question 3: A very tough question. The Steelers best field position for the offense after the first 4 drives was their own 25-yard line. Following a Jordan Berry punt that was fair caught at the Baltimore 12-yard line, Kameron Kelly intercepted a tipped Lamar Jackson pass and returned it ten yards. The Steelers offense started the 5th drive at the Baltimore 16-yard line which ended up being their best starting field position of the game. Unfortunately, the Steelers could only muster a field goal after reaching the Baltimore 7-yard line and having 2nd & 1 on this short drive. Answers ranged from the Pittsburgh 25 all the way to the Baltimore 4. The median response was a best starting position at the Baltimore 40-yard line with many predicting a turnover leading to fortuitous starting position. Jeff McNeil received the point for this question by predicting Pittsburgh’s best starting field position would be the Baltimore 15 – he ended up being closest to the pin – just one yard off.
Question 4: Respondents named six different Steelers who they believed would have the deepest caught target against the Ravens. This meant identifying where the ball was caught and not counting yards after the catch (YAC). 43.0% predicted James Washington getting the long hook-up. Others mentioned included Diontae Johnson, Nick Vannett, Vance McDonald & Johnny Holton. If Holton had caught his one long target, he may have had the longest catch. Unfortunately, the pass was a step beyond his reach. JuJu Smith-Schuster had the longest reception via his 35-yard touchdown but much of the yardage was YAC so did not count for this question. However, Devlin “Duck” Hodges completed a pass to JuJu that traveled 18 yards in the air beyond the line of scrimmage in the 4th quarter. 10.8% of respondents picked JuJu to have the longest catch.
Question 5: Justin Tucker & Chris Boswell put on a kicking clinic. They combined to make all seven of their field goals attempts. Our predictions ranged from 2-7 total field goals being kicked in the game. The median response was 5 with 55.4% picking that number. Just 3.1% correctly picked 7.
Previous Weeks: There are 15- & 5-point bonus up for grabs from week 1 by correctly predicting the Steelers & Browns regular season records for those that answered. 95% of the respondents are still in the running to collect all 20 of those bonus points. Also, from week 3, 50% of respondents from that week may still get a point by correctly predicting how many wins the Steelers would have versus the 49ers, Bengals, Ravens, & Chargers.
We have a new leader! Andy N nosed in front of Jeremy by collecting 3 points this past week. A very tough week, 7 folks dropped off the leaderboard by getting goose-egged in week 5. Just one new entrant to the leaderboard this week – kudos to mokhkw. Keep answering folks & get back on that leaderboard.
Please welcome three new respondents to the Steelers Depot Friday Night Questions: Dudehitt, Steel_Man24, & Goldrush. Answer every week and you never know; you might end up on the top of the leaderboard.
