Is this an NFL first? Serious question. The #1 and #2 picks have been traded in the same year. The Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a deal that would allow Philly to move up to the #2 spot with the Browns kicking back to #8.
Here are all the details of the trade.
The Browns get a nice haul in return, as you’d expect, though the price of moving up wasn’t severe for the Eagles, relatively speaking. This takes the Browns out of the running for Jared Goff and Carson Wentz and they appear likely to roll with Robert Griffin as their starter.
It’s a shift in philosophy for this new regime, the Browns deciding to trade back instead of moving up, as we’ve seen in disastrous decisions for Johnny Manziel and others. The NFL Draft is a week from tomorrow.
