In less than four weeks, Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Kelvin Beachum will hit free agency and even though he’s coming off of serious knee injury that cost him over half of the 2015 season, he should still have plenty of teams bidding for his services.
When you look at the list of tackles who are set to become unrestricted free agents and are under the age of 30 with more than 16 starts, only a few names jump out at you. Those players are Andre Smith, Russell Okung, Cordy Glenn and Beachum.
Being as Smith is a career right tackle, we will assume teams won’t be looking at him as a candidate to switch sides. While Glenn is likely the best of the four I listed, there’s a decent chance the Buffalo Bills will place either the franchise or transition tag on him. Even though Okung is just an average player in my opinion, he’ll still get a lot of attention in free agency and thus might be considered the best available left tackle depending on what ultimately happens with Glenn.
Now that we’ve gone through the top tackles, you can now probably see why Beachum might very well wind up being the second-best unrestricted left tackle in free agency under the age of 30. As long as his knee checks out fine when teams bring him in for a visit, he’s likely to have a new home and a long term lucrative deal when the first week of free agency has come to an end.
