The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t had any free agent visitors since last Friday, but they have two of them in on Wednesday.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore and Jacksonville Jaguars free agent running back Maurice Jones-Drew are currently at the Steelers facility on the Southside having talks.
The visit with Moore has been known about for several days now, but it wasn’t until Wednesday morning that Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Jones would also be in town.
Should the Steelers wind up signing Moore on Wednesday for anything more than the minimum for his accrued years, it could mean that free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery has decided to sign with the Carolina Panthers. However, the Steelers could be using Moore as leverage against Cotchery, who is supposed to make a decision soon as to who he will sign with after meeting with the Panthers on Monday.
As far as Jones-Drew goes, the veteran running back reportedly has other teams interested in him, so it won’t be too surprising if he leaves Pittsburgh unsigned. The Steelers currently have just over $2 million in salary cap space heading into Wednesday and unless a restructure or extension is reported, that’s all they’ll have to work with until June.
More than anything else, both Moore and Jones-Drew will likely have physicals done on Wednesday and be sent on their merry way for future talks should no deals be consummated.
