The Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move on Tuesday when they signed veteran punter Brian Moorman to compete in training camp with second-year punter Drew Butler. To make room for Moorman on the 90 man roster, wide receiver Bert Reed was waived.
Moorman, who was with the Dallas Cowboys just last season, spent his first 12 years in the league with the Buffalo Bills. He has twice been named an All-Pro punter and has made two Pro-Bowl teams. The Bills also named him to the their 50th anniversary team.
In 2012, Moorman had an average of 44.6 yards on 56 punts with 22 of them going inside the opponents 20-yard-line. He only had three punts go for touchbacks and only had one returned for a touchdown to go along with none being blocked.
Butler, who was signed by the Steelers this time last year as an undrafted free agent, was very inconsistent during his rookie season. He averaged 43.8 yards on 77 punts and had one blocked ,and one returned for a touchdown in the first meeting against the Baltimore Ravens.
It is not uncommon for the Steelers to carry two punters during training camp, but many thought that they might bring back Jeremy Kapinos, who missed nearly all of training camp last year with a back injury.
If anything, it will be good for Butler to be around a long-time veteran that very well might help him become a better punter.
Reed was originally signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent last year out of Florida State. He was signed by the Steelers to their practice squad in November of last season, but was never promoted to the 53 man roster.
