After Najee Harris left the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, one of the issues he brought up about his time with them was their lack of leadership on offense. That shouldn’t have been surprising to hear, though. During Harris’ time in Pittsburgh, they were going through a transition period on offense, losing most of their veterans. However, this year, Aaron Rodgers has a chance to be a leader for the Steelers. Rookie safety Sebastian Castro confirmed that Rodgers is already stepping up in that role.
“He’s one of the best quarterbacks to do it for a long time,” Castro said recently on ESPN MX on YouTube. “It’s really cool to have him in the building. He has a lot of knowledge, and a lot of maturity as a player. He’s gonna be a great leader for us, and he already is, he’s already getting his feet wet. He’s only gonna make us better.”
Rodgers is the oldest active player in the NFL, so he’s got a wealth of knowledge to pass on. He’s a four-time league MVP, and a Super Bowl champion. While Rodgers’ skills have declined, he’s still a living legend, which should help the Steelers’ locker room.
Much has been said about Rodgers’ personality. He’s not for everyone, and that’s okay. While he reportedly had some issues with teammates while he was with the New York Jets, most of Rodgers’ former teammates have great things to say about him. He hasn’t hesitated to help players in the past.
As an undrafted free agent, Castro could learn so much from Rodgers. The young safety’s path to making the Steelers’ 53-man roster won’t be easy, but if he soaks up as much knowledge as he can from Rodgers, he could improve his chances. Rodgers has given many defensive backs nightmares for almost two decades. He should be able to help teach Castro what not to do.
Other Steelers have also praised Rodgers’ attitude since he joined their team. The road to get here might’ve been a long one, but it sounds like things are going well so far. Rodgers stated that he wants to be a leader for the Steelers, but he also doesn’t want to overstep as the new guy. However, it sounds like players like Castro are ready to accept whatever guidance Rodgers is willing to give.
