Though Pittsburgh Steelers’ players had Tuesday off, the facility was buzzing today. According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson via the league’s transactions log, the Steelers worked out seven players earlier today.
They are: LBs Caleb Johnson, Darryl Johnson, Vi Jones, Aubrey Miller, and Charles Snowden along with TEs Scotty Washington and E.J Jenkins.
As announced by the team earlier today, they signed two of those players, Johnson and Washington, to the practice squad. TE Noah Gindorff and OT Obinna Eze were released in corresponding moves.
Caleb Johnson was an undrafted free agent who spent the offseason with the New York Jets. Undersized at 5113 and 228 pounds, he ran an impressive 4.44 40 at his Pro Day. He began his college career at UCLA before transferring to Miami (FL) to finish out his career. You can read more about him in our article earlier in the day. He’ll serve as depth while LB Cole Holcomb deals with an ankle injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Washington had spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots, appearing in one game last season. With size and leaping ability, he’ll serve as depth while TE Pat Freiermuth is out, placed on injured reserve Saturday due to a hamstring injury he aggravated as he attempted to return. You can read more about Washington’s background here.
Jenkins was a wide receiver at Georgia Tech trying to make the conversion to TE at the NFL level. In college, he recorded 17 receptions for 316 yards and three touchdowns in his final season with the Yellow Jackets. He previously played at South Carolina where he caught eight passes and one touchdown in 2021. He spent the offseason with the New York Jets before being waived at cutdowns.
Johnson is an EDGE rusher and 7th-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2019. He’s appeared in 38 games, making one start, with 34 tackles and two career sacks. He spent his first two years with the Bills before bouncing around the league, spending time with the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks. He had four tackles in four games last season. The San Francisco 49ers waived/injured him this summer before releasing him with a settlement.
Jones was an UDFA in 2022 out of NC State, signed by the Seattle Seahawks. At 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, he ran a 4.52 40 at his Pro Day. He began his career at USC before being dismissed by the team in 2018. He’s the younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars WR Zay Jones, who the Steelers will see in Week Eight.
Miller hails from Jackson State after beginning his college career at Missouri. With a solid career in the SWAC, recording 117 tackles in 2022. He earned a Senior Bowl invite and played well during the week of action and was named one of our pre-draft sleepers. He spent time with the Miami Dolphins this summer.
Snowden was a long and tall EDGE rusher from Virginia. Standing in at 6063, 243 pounds, he finished his college career with 30 tackles for a loss and 15 sacks. That included six QB takedowns as a senior. He’s spent time with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. You can check out our 2021 scouting report on Snowden here.
Of note is the absence of DB Rashad Wildgoose’s name, who Wilson reported to be trying out with the team earlier in the day. Perhaps that will happen tomorrow.
