Rapoport: Rams Release K Brett Maher After Three Missed Kicks In Loss To Steelers

Two days after missing two field goals and an extra point in a 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Los Angeles Rams are moving on from veteran kicker Brett Maher.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Rams have released Maher Tuesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter followed up with a report that the Rams are signing kicker Lucas Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad to replace him.

Maher missed field goal attempts of 53 and 51 yards on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. He also missed the extra point attempt after Tutu Atwell’s 31-yard touchdown catch late in the first half, giving the Rams a 9-3 halftime lead.

Maher had missed four field goals coming into the Week Seven matchup against the Rams and now sits 17-for-23 on the season.

Following the loss to the Steelers, Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that they’d look at the kicker situation and see what to do, adding that Maher had to be better. Turns out, the Rams looked and decided to move on, bringing in Havrisik.

Havrisik previously spent time on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad for a week in last September before being waived. He then signed to the Browns’ practice squad on August 31 after the Browns cut former fourth-round pick Cade York. Havrisik has yet to kick in a regular-season NFL game.

Prior to signing with the Rams’ practice squad in early September before being signed to the 53-man roster, Maher was with the Denver Broncos throughout the offseason before Denver acquired kicker Wil Lutz from New Orleans via trade. Maher previously kicked for the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints and has gone 111-for-139 in his career on field goal attempts and 140-for-147 on extra points.
