Hours after reportedly losing CB Cam Sutton, the Pittsburgh Steelers are replacing him with a big name. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is signing CB Patrick Peterson.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a two-year deal. Peterson reportedly wants to play two more seasons in the NFL.
Peterson, turning 33 in July, is an eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time All Pro. Last season, he picked off five passes for the Minnesota Vikings. A first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2011 draft, he’s a high-pedigree player Mike Tomlin has always held in high regard.
In a recent interview with Schefter, Peterson said he wanted to sign with a team who could win him “jewelry,” aka a Super Bowl ring.
Peterson revived his career in Minnesota last season, starting all 17 games and tying the Vikings lead with five picks. For his career, he’s started 184 games, intercepting 34 passes with 610 career tackles. He’ll replace Sutton, lost to Detroit earlier in the day, on the outside.
Peterson also told Schefter he didn’t mind playing in the cold, calling himself a “ball player.”
For years, Peterson has been casually linked to the Steelers. Back in 2018, Mike Tomlin brushed aside the rumors, saying he didn’t partake in “hypothetical games.” But it’s no longer hypothetical. Peterson is about to become a Steeler. He’ll sign his deal when the new league year begins Wednesday afternoon.
