At 84 years old, former Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Tom Moore is still around the NFL and doing what he loves: watching and coaching the game of football.
Due to his time spent in the NFL from 1977 to the present day — 46 years — Moore, who is currently an offensive consultant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is being honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Moore is being honored with the “Awards of Excellence”, which honors four categories of team contributors, including assistant coaches, athletic trainers, equipment managers, and public-relations personnel.
Moore is among the 17 individuals who will receive the Pro Football Hall of Fame “Awards of Excellence” for 2023. He and the 16 others will be recognized in Canton, Ohio, on June 28-29.
Moore entered the NFL in 1977, joining the Steelers as the team’s wide receivers coach. He was part of the Super Bowl XIII and XVI coaching staffs, overseeing players such as Hall of Famers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Moore served as the Steelers’ wide receiver coach until 1982 when he was promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator. He served in that role from 1983-89.
Following 13 seasons in Pittsburgh, Moore went on to spend time with eight teams total. After his stint in Pittsburgh, Moore held the assistant head coach role in Minnesota from 1990-93 under Jerry Burns and Dennis Green. He then spent three seasons in Detroit as the Lions’ offensive coordinator on an offense featuring Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders and star receiver Herman Moore.
After his stint in Detroit, Moore spent a year with the New Orleans Saints as the running backs coach, and then landed with the Indianapolis Colts as the offensive coordinator. He spent a decade under Tony Dungy, running an offense led by Hall of Famers Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison and soon-to-be Hall of Famer Reggie Wayne. Moore helped lead the Colts to a Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
Moore then spent two additional seasons with the Colts as a senior assistant, before then serving as a consultant with the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans in 2011 and 2012. He took a year off from the game in 2013 before returning as an assistant head coach in Arizona under Bruce Arians from 2014-17. He then followed Arians to Tampa Bay as a consultant in 2019 — a role he continues to serve in today.
Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 in recognition of his 13 seasons as a Steelers assistant coach. He was selected to be part of the 2015 class for the Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award by the Pro Football Writers of America. This award is given for lifetime achievements by an NFL assistant coach.
