The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun to trim their roster, beginning with probably the biggest name you’ll see on the upcoming list, releasing Zach Mettenberger today.

Mettenberger was claimed off waivers on August 31st of last year after Bruce Gradkowski was placed on injured reserve. The Steelers had interest in him coming out of LSU but passed on the chance to acquire him several times before injuries forced their hand. Mettenberger served as the #3, and when Ben Roethlisberger was injured, the #2, for the entire season, never throwing a pass or seeing a snap. Though some fan were excited to see him get a chance, the odds of him ever contributing to the team were slim to none.
The team drafted Josh Dobbs in the 4th round Saturday, sealing his fate.
Pittsburgh will make several other cuts today in order to get their roster down to the NFL maximum of 90.
