The Pittsburgh Steelers have made quite a few moves over the course of the last several days as they have re-signed several players who were about to become unrestricted free agents. Being as most of the contract details have already been reported, I can now update you as to where I currently have the team when it comes to their overall salary cap status just ahead of the start of the new league year.
In the table below, you will see that safety Robert Golden, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, cornerback William Gay and guard Ramon Foster have all be added. I should point out, however, that the details of the three-year contract that Foster recently signed have not been reported, so for now, I have a projected cap charge estimate in 2016 of $3.15 million for him as that looks like the charge Buffalo Bills guard Richie Incognito will have in 2016 now that he has also signed a new three-year contract. I chose to shoot a little high with that number to be on the safe side and I will update the amount as soon as the real details are made known.
As you can see, the Steelers are right at $3,191,789 under the salary cap according to my numbers and that includes roster bonus and veteran cap credit payback charges I expect the team to have.
At some point, I still expect the Steelers to restructure a contract or two and possibly lower the 2016 cap charge of linebacker Lawrence Timmons via an extension or pay cut. additionally, the Steelers are expected to clear more cap room later on in the offseason when they get guard David DeCastro signed to a new long-term contract extension.
It’s also worth noting that the Steelers might still be attempting to resign nose tackle Steve McLendon and tackle Kelvin Beachum as prior to the start of the free agent signing period. Additionally, the Steelers appear as though they will try to sign San Diego Chargers free agent tight end Ladarius Green on Thursday.

UPDATE: I have now updated the table with the contract numbers for Foster and Green and that puts the Steelers roughly $2,014,289 under the cap. I’m sure we will hear about a restructure or two in the coming days.
