The Eric Weddle news has been spotty since free agency has begun. While there have been plenty of rumors about the Pittsburgh Steelers being interested, they aren’t the only potential landing spot. The Oakland Raiders appear to be making a strong play for the veteran safety, according to CSN’s Scott Bair, who just sent out this tweet.
Bruce Irvin, who just signed with Oakland, made this call for Weddle’s services.
For what it’s worth, newly signed Ladarius Green said he will try and contact Weddle but didn’t know what affect it would have. So, a slightly less aggressive pitch.
The big issue appears to be a matter of money. The safety market is hot with Tashaun Gipson receiving $7.5 million per year and Rodney McLeod getting just a little under that. I’m sure it’s difficult for Weddle to justify being paid less than that, even if he desires going to a place who can win.
Aditi Kinkabwala helped confirm the price tag obstacle in a tweet yesterday.
A third team could come out of nowhere but all indications suggest the Weddle race is coming down to Pittsburgh versus Oakland. The Steelers can have more substance to the “winning” argument but the Raiders came into free agency flush with cap space. Oakland would also mean Weddle wouldn’t have to relocate his family to the other side of the United States.
He does not have any official visits lined up yet. And so we wait for the man with the beard to make his decision. Stick with Steelers Depot for any additional updates.
