If you are like me, you were hoping to hear some positive news this weekend about Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva during the annual rookie minicamp, but according to reports, the former Army captain was excused for the session so that he could get married.

Villanueva, who was signed last year to the Steelers practice squad after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles during their final round of roster cuts, spent the entire 2014 season on the team’s practice squad. He made the move to the offensive side of the football with the Steelers after playing defensive end with the Eagles.
Being as Villanueva isn’t taking part in the rookie minicamp, that means we’re unlikely to hear about his progress until the team reconvenes in a few more weeks for their first of three OTA sessions.
Villanueva, who is already 26-years-old, will likely be given the opportunity to win the backup swing tackle during the offseason. That will mean that he’ll likely have to beat out fellow tackle Mike Adams, who was drafted in the second-round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. In his first three season with the Steelers, Adams has played 1372 snaps and has made 20 starts.
