Gettis had been a member of the Steelers practice squad since the middle of October. He was originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fifth-round of the2012 NFL Draft out of Iowa. Last season, he dressed for 13 games with Redskins and played a total of 17 snaps at left guard. He was waived by the Redskins back in August after playing in their first three preseason games.
A few weeks ago, the Steelers lost practice squad defensive ends Josh Mauro and Nick Williams to other teams. Mauro was signed by the Arizona Cardinals while Williams was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Steelers will now more than likely sign another offensive lineman to their practice squad to replace Gettis.
