With just a few weeks left to go before the start of the 2014 regular season, all eyes remain on the contract situation with Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract
By the sound of things, the team is trying to get an extension done with the former fourth-round draft pick. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are indeed still trying to work out a contract extension with the Citadel product before the preseason ends.
So far this offseason, the Steelers have gotten extensions done with center Maurkice Pouncey, kicker Shaun Suisham and tackle Marcus Gilbert. We have speculated for a while that Allen would be a priority this offseason, but up until now, there’s been no real talk about a deal getting done.
Back in June, I speculated that a five-year, $20 million contract (four-year extension) with $9 million guaranteed could get the job done for both sides. We don’t have long to wait until we see if the two sides can get things hammered out and I’m still willing to bet that they do.
