The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin training camp a little more than one week from today, so I thought we would spend these last several days talking about a few players that many believe will have a decent shot at making the final 53 man roster. Basically, these are players that we can’t quite consider locks, but do consider as being on the bubble.
After reading the recap of the player that we highlight, you can cast your vote as to whether or not you think that player will make the final 53 man roster. Each poll will run for three days.
The eighth player up in this series is sixth-year cornerback Brice McCain.
2013 Season Recap:
McCain, who was released by the Houston Texans back in March, had a miserable 2013 season that included him allowing at least a half a dozen touchdown catches and a 63% completion percentage. The former sixth-round pick of the Texans played mostly in the slot last season as a nickel cornerback, but was forced to play some outside due to injures. To make matters worse, McCain was flagged a total of ten times last season with a couple of those penalties coming on special teams, where he only registered three total tackles in the 134 plays he was in on.
2014 Outlook:
The Steelers don’t have a lot of experienced depth at the cornerback position heading into training camp and that somewhat plays in McCain’s favor. However, due to his size and abilities, he is merely a nickel cornerback without much upside. McCain’s path to the Steelers final 53 man roster might include him having to beat out fellow cornerback Antwon Blake, who has received quite a few accolades during the offseason for his potential as a backup nickle cornerback. On top of that, Blake is a well-established special teams player. With rookie draft pick Shaquille Richardson also looking like he will make the 53 man roster this year, McCain probably needs to hope that the coaching staff decides that they need to keep six cornerbacks in order to survive the final cut. He is certainly one player that needs to have a great training camp if he is to be on the roster at the start of the season.
