Over the course of the last four weeks of offseason practices, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only carried one place kicker on their 90 man roster, but you have to wonder if veteran Shaun Suisham will soon get someone to share training camp duties with prior to the team reporting to Latrobe.
It’s not like Suisham really needs competition, however, as he’s currently coming off of his best season as a professional. Last year, the Bowling Green product made 30 of the 32 field goals that he attempted and was perfect on all extra points.
Bringing in another kicker wouldn’t be a slight against Suisham. Instead, it would save some wear and tear on his leg. Over the course of the last three preseasons, Suisham has shared kicking duties with Swayze Waters and Danny Hrapmann and he easily beat out both.
When Suisham went undrafted out of college in 2005, he was originally signed by the Steelers to compete in training camp against then-incumbent Jeff Reed. Even though he made his one field goal attempt during the preseason that year, he was released late that August as expected.
Suisham is entering the final year of his current contract in 2014. He has been the Steelers kicker since replacing the aforementioned Reed midway through the 2010 season.
