Now that safety Mike Mitchell is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, everyone is curious as to what number he will wear. During his one season with the Carolina Panthers, Mitchell wore No. 21 and being that fellow Steelers safety Robert Golden currently has that number, there might be some negotiations that take place in the near future.
“I’m going to have to, because I had some success in it,” said Mitchell when asked if he’ll need to talk to Golden about getting No. 21 from him in a Thursday interview on Steelers Live. “I’m sure he’s a really good guy. He and DVD (DeMarcus Van Dyke) were tweeting me back and forth talking about $50,000, and I have no money. I told him I would possibly wash his car or do his dishes – things like that – take out his trash. But if I have to pay him, maybe I will, but I think they have 34, so I don’t know.”
Mitchell wore No. 34 at Ohio University and also had that number when he was with the Oakland Raiders as well. Steelers current unrestricted running back LaRod Stephens-Howling wore that number last season, but there’s no guarantee right now he’ll be re-signed.
In reality, now that Mitchell is in town and fellow safety Will Allen has been re-signed, Golden is not a lock to make the final 2014 roster unless the Steelers decide to keep five safeties once again. In other words, Mitchell might can save himself some money by waiting things out. In the meantime, he can wear No. 34 during the offseason and in training camp.
