The Pittsburgh Steelers might have made through the preseason relatively healthy, but they sure didn’t make through their first regular season game that way. Not only did they potentially lose center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Larry Foote for the season against the Tennessee Titans, they also lost running back LaRod Stephens-Howling as well.
With Stephens-Howling now out for the season and rookie running back Le’Veon Bell potentially sidelined for another week or two with his sprained foot, you have to wonder if the Steelers might be on the phone right now calling either Jonathan Dwyer or Baron Batch.
Batch was waived during the first round of cuts, while Dwyer was let go a week ago Saturday during the final round of cuts.
The Steelers still have Isaac Redman and Felix Jones until Bell returns, but will likely need a third for the game next Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Neither Dwyer nor Batch have much upside, but both at least know the offense and both can play on special teams should the need arise.
Dwyer worked out for the New York Giants last week following his release, but was not signed.
The Steelers also have Alvester Alexander on their practice squad right now, so he might very well be an option until Bell is ready to play.
As far as other free agent running backs that are currently available, Michael Turner, Cedric Benson, Willis McGahee and Ryan Grant have all yet to find homes, but one would think the Steelers wouldn’t have interest in that group.
