With Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Mike Adams sidelined for a while as he recovers from stab wounds suffered in an early Saturday morning carjacking attempt, it was Kelvin Beachum and not Guy Whimper that took the first team reps Tuesday at right tackle, according to Jim Wexell on Twitter.
Over the course of the first two OTA sessions, Beachum has worked as the backup center behind starter Maurkice Pouncey. Last season, however, Beachum started the last five games of the regular season at right tackle after both Adams and Marcus Gilbert were sidelined for the season with ankle injuries.
Beachum said last week that he was struggling with his snap consistency while learning the new position, but vowed to get it right in the future.
The Steelers depth at the tackle position is not great and it really didn\’t improve with the signing of Whimper several weeks ago. Whimper, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars early in the offseason, struggled at the right tackle position over the course of the last several seasons.
