The Pittsburgh Steelers have now lost two of their unrestricted free agents to other teams as running back Rashard Mendenhall has signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday.
Mendenhall, who was reportedly expected to sign with the Denver Broncos, chose instead to reunite himself with Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, the Steelers former offensive coordinator.
The one-year deal is good for both sides. Mendenhall gets a chance to prove that he is fully healthy and back to being the running back he was prior to the ACL injury that he suffered in the 2011 season finale against the Cleveland Browns and the Cardinals only have one year committed to him should he not perform.
A solid year by Mendenhall would allow him to test free agency again next off-season as he obviously didn\’t have many suitors this off-season due to the current question marks associated with him.
The Steelers lost wide receiver Mike Wallace to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday. Both Wallace and Mendenhall could produce compensatory draft picks in 2014.
