Week 7 of the 2012 NFL season is in the books and here are the TOX stats for the week along with the year to date numbers for all 32 teams at the bottom. The +2 teams went 3-5 this week and that is the correction I feared was on the way, but I didn\’t expect it to over correct as the number usually hovers around 80% for the season. This brings the year to date +2 number to 50-15 (77%), which is now 3% lower than the expected number. Have no fear, it will jump back to 80% soon.
Teams with a +1 TOX stat finished 1-2 for the week and that brings that year to date number to 15-12 overall. This stat is really not worth keeping though as the TOX stat is centered around the +2 number, but I always like to keep a running total of it nonetheless.
Good news for Pittsburgh Steelers this week as their +7 TOX number against the Cincinnati Bengals was the high number of the week. The Steelers defense also did not allow an explosive play in the game and that is a first for the season. The Steelers offense also registered its first two explosive plays on the ground this past week. That is a positive sign for an offense that is already explosive through the air. The Steelers year to date TOX number is 15 now and that ranks them second behind the Chicago Bears. The defense has also allowed a league low 11 explosive plays on the season.
The Bengals and Baltimore Ravens offenses were the only two teams that failed to register an explosive play this past week.
I will be tracking this stat throughout the year as it is a good measuring stick to show how important explosive plays and turnovers are in each and every game.
