Season 2, Episode 42 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and I review the Steelers 24-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. Not only did the Steelers get a crucial division road win, they appeared to get through the game relatively injury free and then got to watch the Ravens lay another egg a week after beating the Steelers. A good day all around.
David and I spend a lot of time this week actually going through the play-by-play and looking at what each team was trying to do both offensively and defensively and how the other team countered that. The first 15 minutes may have been the best 15 minutes the Steelers have played all year, but that was flipped on its head when Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark let the Bengals complete what was essentially a hail mary for a touchdown and Heath Miller had a pass bounce of his chest for an interception. We go through why things changed and who was responsible. David thinks Mike Tomlin also butchered the clock management at the end of the first half and we discuss what he should have done and why.
The second half only saw two scores and saw the Black & Gold slow to adjust to what was a relatively obvious Bengals game plan. But the Steelers responded after a Bengals score and finally the defense came up with two turnovers and the offense was able to close out the game with a good late drive. We have a lot of banter back and forth about whether the Steelers offensive and defensive lines played well, whether the defense adjusted quickly enough and whether the offensive play calling in the fourth quarter was too conservative. We close by looking at the role of Hines Ward going forward and what is coming up the rest of the week on the podcast and for the Steelers as the team begins its bye week.
