Steelers Offensive Line Breakdown Play By Play Versus Ravens Week 13

Below is the play by play break down of the offensive line from the Sunday night week 13 game versus the Baltimore Ravens. It is merely a pass or fail grade on if I think the lineman did his job or not. It also should be noted that we go under assumptions that we know what the assignment on each play was and sometimes it is not obvious. We have to grade on what we see and go from there. We added small notes to each play as well. As always if you disagree with any play, do so respectfully in the comments and give your reason so I can go back through and re-watch your disagreement.

Flozell Adams – Flozell was well on his way to having another pretty good game until he was rolled up on and suffered a high ankle sprain. Where he will always have his problems is around the end with speedy guys. He does seem to be able to get just to the edge fast enough some plays to give them one final push and pass rushers are having to take a longer way around. Any pass rusher with great feet and a good spin move will always have an upper hand on him, but not many will physically be able to push him around due to his size. He has become one of my favorites to watch over the weeks, especially when he gets to bat small linebackers and smallish ends around. He is not mailing it in on as many plays now and not getting hardly any penalties on him either. He could probably use a week or two off with that ankle, but has become an above average right tackle.

Ramon Foster – Foster actually had a decent game compared to the rest of the line. The Steelers were not handling the point of attack well on the line and the Ravens had tons of penetration or running lane fills. He seems much more comfortable, but did have a false start on him. as I watched each play over and over on him, I wondered how Trai Essex would of faired on the same play. His biggest draw back is that he does not finish some plays. Of course several linemen share that bad trait around the league. He also does not seem to have a nasty streak in him like Pouncey or Kemoeatu has.

Maurkice Pouncey – You have to wonder if Pouncey is starting to hit the proverbial wall. Do not get me wrong, he still remains the best one on the line right now, but has not been as dominant the last couple of weeks. Of course Haloti Ngata and Kyle Williams are no days at the park and he has logged over 150 the last 2 games. A bye in the playoffs will really recharge him. He had a great first half, but was losing the leverage battle in the second half. Another sign that he may be tiring quicker.

Jonathan Scott – He had is hands full with Terrell Suggs, It was obvious. Overall it was his run blocking that suffered the most, especially on runs to his side. I did not come out of watching the tape that he is awful, just below average. He held his own on pass blocking most of the night, but it was good that Ben Roethlisberger was getting rid of the ball a bit quicker than normal. He also got help a few times from running backs chipping. He often times is just slow off the snap and that really hurts a guy who is just not that blessed with great foot work. Like it or not, he is your left tackle going forward. He remains a better option than Tony Hills for sure.

Chris Kemoeatu – It ended up being another off game for Kemoeatu as I thought he would rebound better from his ass kicking last week. I will say it was less obvious this week and I am beginning to wonder just how healthy he is right now. Like Scott he struggled in run blocking and when he pulled to trap block, missed his guy a few times. On tape it looked much better than the Bills game, but it is not the same Kemoeatu we saw earlier in the year.

Trai Essex – Essex was likely slated to only get about 8 snaps on Sunday night as a run blocking extra tight end, but when Flozell went down, he was next up at right tackle. He was average as you would expect and seemed like he had not taken many snaps at the position. He got help a few times from Foster and a back, but overall he scored alright on 18 plays. He will certainly get more reps this week in practice if Adams is not back so hold your breath.

Doug Legursky – Legursky only saw one snap as the victory formation left tight end. Everything went perfect. lol
