Steelers Offensive Line Breakdown Play By Play Versus Patriots Week 10

Below is the play by play break down of the offensive line from the Sunday night week 10 game versus the New England Patriots. It is merely a pass or fail grade on if I think the lineman did his job or not. It also should be noted that we go under assumptions that we know what the assignment on each play was and sometimes it is not obvious. We have to grade on what we see and go from there. We added small notes to each play as well. As always if you disagree with any play, do so respectfully in the comments and give your reason so I can go back through and re-watch your disagreement. I did not include the spike to stop the clock in the total stats and also the spike to stop the clock as that is just too easy of a way to pad stats and not a true reflection.

Jonathan Scott – Just as I thought, Scott will be a thorn at left tackle. He is slow off the ball and has very bad footwork. He just is not quick. He tends to also try to cheat and instead of sliding to the edge he back pedals while moving left. This allows a better head start by the pass rusher and puts Scott almost in the lap of Ben Roethlisberger. Hard to judge Scott in the run game when most of the few runs were to the right. Did not score well though on the few he was really counted on.

Maurkice Pouncey – Pouncey was the lone bright spot really as most of the heavy pass rush and stunts came well to his left. He got and gave help to and from Trai Essex and Ramon Foster nicely on the night. He got blown up a few times on the run, but had the Steelers been able to run more, I think his numbers would of finished in good shape. He really gives 100% every play and is very strong with a good mean streak.

Trai Essex – Essex struggled pretty bad once again. Normally his run stats are better, but he also struggled in that part of his game as well. It might be time to give Doug Legursky another shot at the spot. The Steelers really need a right guard come the draft or free agency.

Ramon Foster – The stats say Foster did well, but most of the pressure came on the end to his left. When asked to pull right, he is very slow, he does however move pretty good to his left. He is not as nasty as Chris Kemoeatu, especially in the run game. He was benefited several times in pass protection by help from Pouncey as well as some easy stat pads late in the game on 3 and 4 man pass rushes when the game was in hand. He does tend to get confused on stunts, but did save a few solid pass blocks.

Flozell Adams – Same old Flozell. Beaten on the edge several times, but looked better in the run game although the Steelers only ran 15 times. He is what he is now and the Steelers are better served to run his way now. He was sat down late in the game so Tony Hills could get some work.

Tony Hills – Hills came in very late after the game was pretty much over. All 11 plays were pass plays and many times just 3 and 4 man pass rushes so it is really hard to grade him on that body of work. He lost his man on 2 of the 11 plays and looked like he needed a few plays to get warmed up.
