Steelers Offensive Line Breakdown Play By Play Versus Bengals Week 9

Below is the play by play break down of the offensive line from the Monday night week 9 game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. It is merely a pass or fail grade on if I think the lineman did his job or not. It also should be noted that we go under assumptions that we know what the assignment on each play was and sometimes it is not obvious. We have to grade on what we see and go from there. We added small notes to each play as well. As always if you disagree with any play, do so respectfully in the comments and give your reason so I can go back through and re-watch your disagreement. I did not include the two kneel downs to end the game in the total stats and also the spike to stop the clock as those are just easy ways to pad stats and not a true reflection.

Max Starks – It is really hard to grade Starks as he really toughed it out long after he had the neck problem. He even added a bigger neck brace as he thought it was a stinger. It does not matter now going forward as he was placed on IR today.

Maurkice Pouncey – Pouncey really had a strong game especially in pass protection. He was blown off the ball a few times in the run ground, but that will happen time to time. He left with a bruised shin and after getting x-rays and a shot, seemed even stronger when he came back in. Great effort by him.

Trai Essex – Trai struggled in both phases and really still has problems with pass rushers beating him inside. He also was flagged on the night. This is about the type game you have come to expect from Essex and right guard really needs addressing in the offseason. For now the Steelers just have to deal with it.

Chris Kemoeatu – Kemo was just getting started when he was sidelined with a knee injury. He was looking strong in the running game once again, but the night ended pretty quick for him.

Flozell Adams – Flo was Flo. He actually graded out pretty well on the night and looked better in pass protection. He really was a mismatch against the ends and linebackers put up against him and still expect him to struggle with the more athletic type ends going forward. He tends to try to help too much at times when he his not being challenged and will actually push pass rushers off of being engaged as he did in the game on the lone sack as he pushed the man right off engagement with Trai Essex. Adams is no Pro Bowl right tackle, but would still easily start now for about half the teams in the NFL.

Jonathan Scott – I can guarantee you that it was a challenge for Scott to play left guard as he just does not get the practice reps there. He filled in pretty good for Starks after he went down, but where most people that grade him overlook is how slow he gets off the ball. He just is not quick and his footwork sliding to the edge is not the best. He has the most time logged at left tackle and will undoubtedly be first up to be the left tackle for the remainder of the season. He also will be the first man that other teams try to go after. His future is in his own hands now.

Doug Legursky – Legursky was not as dominate as Pouncey is when he came in at center, but filled in nicely just the same. His pass blocking was better than his run blocking on the night and he looked like he had not played left guard in a while. If you remember he mostly played right guard when Trai Essex was down with the ankle injury earlier in the year. As long as he does not let defenders get arms inside him, he seems to do pretty well.
