Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich injured his left knee during the first half of an exhibition game against Carolina. Leftwich completed an 18-yard pass to rookie Emmanuel Sanders before being knocked off his feet by the swinging leg of right tackle Jonathan Scott. The play occurred with 10:25 left in the second quarter at Heinz Field. Leftwich was examined by team doctors on a table behind the Steelers\’ bench, then limped into a nearby tunnel and down the stairs that lead to the locker room. The press box said he would not return to the game and head coach Mike Tomlin called it a knee sprain at halftime, but did not seem too convincing in the severity of it. Leftwich was expected to start in place of Ben Roethlisberger who will start the season on the reserve/suspended list. UPDATE: Leftwich has reportedly been sent to a local hospital for an MRI.
