Suddenly, the Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves in a predicament at quarterback. They wanted to bring Justin Fields back, but he’s reportedly agreed to terms with the New York Jets. Sam Darnold is also reportedly joining the Seattle Seahawks. That leaves the Steelers with limited options. However, it seems like Aaron Rodgers is a real possibility for them. Some fans might not love the sound of that, but analyst Kyle Brandt believes Rodgers might be the only real option left for Pittsburgh.
“Seems to me there’s only one person whose talent, resumé, experience befits that Steelers job,” Brandt said in a video on his Twitter on Monday. “It’s the only player in league history who’s played 20 seasons, wins four MVPs, and has a Netflix special.
“You don’t like Rodgers, Steelers fans out there saying no Rodgers. Fine, he’s not for everybody. Who then? Who’s the guy? If not Rodgers, who? Or maybe it’s just time to pour some tea, play the Renegade, and say, ‘Let’s do this thing.'”
Rodgers is one of the most decorated players in NFL history. He’s basically done everything a quarterback can do. However, he’s 41 years old and just tore his Achilles to start the 2023 season. Last year, he didn’t look like the same player.
In 2024, Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. That’s not awful, but watching him play, it was clear Rodgers was different. Mike Tomlin mentioned that he values mobility in a quarterback, but Rodgers looked sapped of athleticism. Maybe he’ll be better in 2025 after fully bouncing back from his injury, but there’s no guarantee that will happen.
Rodgers’ play isn’t the only issue with him. The biggest problem he presents is his personality. Rodgers has been a controversial figure over the past few years. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind. That’s allegedly been an issue in the locker room. Perhaps he’ll be on his best behavior in Pittsburgh. Steelers fans probably don’t want any more drama on the team, though.
Brandt is right that the Steelers’ options are getting slim. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the Steelers are getting close to begging. Is Russell Wilson a better option than Rodgers? What about Daniel Jones? Things get grim after those names. How would the Steelers look with Jameis Winston or Joe Flacco under center? The answer likely isn’t good.
Although Rodgers brings some baggage, he might be the best quarterback left on the market. If the Steelers want to win a playoff game in 2025, they might need to turn to Rodgers. Otherwise, they could find themselves going one-and-done in the postseason again—or even not making the playoffs at all.
