One day after making a big splash on the offensive side of the football, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in talks to make a relatively big move on the defensive side of the football.
According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, the Steelers are “in talks” with veteran cornerback Darius Slay.
Slay was slated to be released by the Philadelphia Eagles last week and designated as a post-June 1 cut after helping leading the Eagles to a win in Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Last season with he started 14 games and recorded 49 tackles. However, Slay did not intercept a pass for the first time since his rookie season. In the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl title though, Slay broke up four passes.
The veteran cornerback turned 34 years old in January and has previously made comments about playing for the Steelers, stating he has a lot of love for head coach Mike Tomlin.
“Everybody know Mike Tomlin, you know what I’m saying?” Slay said last December on his Big Play podcast. “One of the best coaches that ever do it. I love Mike Tomlin. Like, if I wasn’t playing for Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles, he’d be one of the next coaches I’d be wanting to play for. Just because I hear such great things about him. I done met him a couple times. We had great talks, man. I respect what he’s doing over there. He respects my game.”
Ahead of the 2023 season when Slay was a free agent, he nearly signed with the Steelers after being courted by team captain Cameron Heyward.
Last week, Slay expressed his desire to play for the Eagles or the Lions after being designated a post-June 1 release, but reiterated his love for Mike Tomlin.
