As Mike Tomlin once said, never say never but…never. That’s a fair way to characterize the odds of QB Russell Wilson playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. With Aaron Rodgers officially in the door, even if he’s yet to sign, it’s the latest and surest sign that the Steelers are moving on from Wilson.
Joining Rich Eisen Friday, NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero unofficially closed the door on Wilson’s return.
“Nothing shocks me, but I would be very surprised if Russell Wilson under any circumstances is back in Pittsburgh,” Pelissero told Eisen shortly after the news of Rodgers’ visit broke.
Wilson is in a holding pattern as Rodgers ponders his next move. The New York Giants are in the mix for both quarterbacks, Rodgers their first choice and likely Wilson’s destination should Rodgers sign with Pittsburgh. The Cleveland Browns remain a possibility too for Wilson.
The Steelers entered the offseason claiming to want continuity. A desire to bring back Justin Fields or Wilson. While they pursued Fields, they’ve shown zero interest in Wilson. On paper, he’s a good scheme fit. A moon ball that pairs nicely with George Pickens and DK Metcalf and the chance to be healthy for an entire season instead of taking over midway through 2024, a difficult situation for all parties.
Reasons against Wilson haven’t been explicitly stated but the team’s five-game losing streak to end the season coupled with a rift with the coaching staff, Wilson and OC Arthur Smith reportedly had a strained relationship, are the two biggest drivers.
“They’re now making clear they would like to sign Aaron Rodgers over Russell Wilson. He is no better and maybe even lower than their third choice,” Pelissero said of Pittsburgh’s preference.
Fields and Rodgers were clearly wanted over Wilson. Pelissero also seems to be hinting at Sam Darnold also being on Pittsburgh’s radar with at least two reports indicating the Steelers made him an offer. They were turned down as Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
The dominoes haven’t fallen yet. But they’re beginning to take shape. Rodgers to the Steelers. Wilson to the Giants. Cleveland…doing something (Kirk Cousins?). And a new-look landscape for some of the most notable veteran quarterbacks of the last decade.
