The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation remains in a holding pattern. Though are in talks with 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, there is a possibility that if things fall through with four-time NFL MVP, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson could return for another season in Pittsburgh.
That’s the latest from the Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac Tuesday afternoon. He tweeted it moments ago.
“It’s possible Russell Wilson could return to the Steelers if ongoing discussions with Aaron Rodgers fail to result in a financial agreement, per multiple sources,” Dulac tweeted.

On NFL Network’s Free Agent Frenzy, Ian Rapoport also indicated Russell Wilson would be in consideration if Rodgers does not sign with Pittsburgh.
Just one day ago during an appearance on 102.5 WDVE’s Morning Show, Dulac stated it was “safe to say” that Wilson could be counted out as returning to the Steelers. Now, after missing out on Justin Fields and Sam Darnold in free agency, and the situation with Rodgers dragging out as he continues to mull his options, the Steelers could be considering running it back with Wilson.
Russell Wilson started 11 regular-season games for the Steelers, going 6-5 in the regular season and helping lead Pittsburgh to the playoffs. But in the AFC Wild Card Round, the Steelers were blown out by the AFC North-rival Baltimore Ravens, 28-14, ending the season with a five-game losing streak in which the offense under Wilson didn’t score more than 17 points down the stretch.
Wilson also reportedly clashed with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith late in the year after Smith reportedly handcuffed him, not allowing him to change plays at the line of scrimmage. Wilson downplayed the rift with Smith during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, but the headlines weren’t pretty, and the ship seemingly sailed in Pittsburgh for Wilson.
With things seemingly trending away from him in Pittsburgh — the Steelers reportedly wanted to move forward with Fields as their starter in 2025 — options like the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, and New York Giants remained for Wilson. Then the Raiders traded for Geno Smith, the Jets struck a two-year, $40 million deal with Fields and now the Giants are waiting on a decision from Rodgers, putting themselves in the same situation as the Steelers.
As the QB musical chairs continue, the Steelers and Wilson could be the last ones left standing with no other options, which could result in them running it back for 2025. That would mean some relationships would need mended behind the scenes, if the reports are true.
Wilson might not be the Steelers’ first – or second or third — choice, but he might be their only choice the longer this drags out.
