The Pittsburgh Steelers have been in the market for a wide receiver since the offseason, and while the team is 6-2 without making any major outside additions, it could look to add someone before the Nov. 5 trade deadline. On The Joe Starkey Show on 93.7 The Fan, The Pat McAfee Show’s Mark Kaboly thinks that Steelers GM Omar Khan will push to add a receiver.
“Behind the starting three right now, what do you have? You have Andy Isabella. You have Brandon Johnson. You have Scotty Miller. That’s not really gonna move the needle if a guy like even Calvin Austin [III] or Scotty Miller gets hurt,” Kaboly said Wednesday. “I think they’ll find somebody, but you’re probably gonna be underwhelmed by the guy they bring in.”
The Steelers attempted to bring in a big-name receiver, as they were in on Brandon Aiyuk this offseason as well as Davante Adams a few weeks ago when he was on the market. With WR Christian Kirk out for the season after an injury this weekend, there just aren’t that many available receivers left. Tony Pauline reported that Courtland Sutton is a possibility to be dealt, but it seems as if Denver would want more than the Steelers could be willing to give up.
A depth move would make a lot of sense. While the Steelers do have Roman Wilson, he’s on IR and likely won’t be a factor until late in the season, if at all. Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said today the Steelers are going to need Wilson, but if someone gets hurt or underperforms before Wilson is able to return, the Steelers will be in a bind with their receiver depth.
Alex Kozora listed some wide receiver options for the Steelers two weeks ago, and a few names on that list still make sense, especially as depth additions. David Moore and Cedrick Wilson Jr. could both be veterans the Steelers target, with Wilson having his best game of the season last weekend with six receptions for 57 yards. Moore may also be an option with the Panthers looking to get younger and potentially give more playing time to someone like rookie Jalen Coker, who’s had a few nice games this season.
None of those names are super exciting, but the Steelers got solid production out of their receiver room in Week 8, and they won’t need to make a big splash. They’ve shown they can win with what they have, but adding more depth to the room makes sense, and that’s likely the route Pittsburgh will go in the next week.
