The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing TE Scotty Washington to their practice squad, according to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson.
As Wilson reported and we wrote about this morning, Washington was brought in for a workout on Tuesday. Evidently, he performed well and will offer depth for the team. TE Pat Freiermuth landed on IR after aggravating a hamstring injury initially suffered in Week Four and will miss at least the next three games.
Undrafted in 2020 out of Wake Forest, Washington has spent time with the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals. He’s appeared in one NFL game, a 2022 contest with the Pats. As our Josh Carney noted, Washington was targeted on a 3rd and 29 heave by QB Mac Jones, tipping the ball back to WR Jakobi Meyers for a wild-looking touchdown.
A wide receiver in college, he weighed in at 6053, 217 pounds for his Pro Day workout but has bulked up since then. Wilson notes he’s listed at 247 pounds. He caught 35 passes for 607 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior for Wake Forest.
Pittsburgh has gotten little production out of its tight ends this year, though Mike Tomlin seemed unconcerned when asked about it during his Tuesday press conference.
Washington join TE Noah Gindorff on the practice squad, assuming Gindorff isn’t released in a corresponding move. Currently on the team’s 53-man roster at the position are rookie Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward, and Rodney Williams.
