Report: Packers Could Be Without Safety Darnell Savage For Steelers Game

The Green Bay Packers could be without starting safety Darnell Savage for their Week 10 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reports that the injury Savage suffered against the Denver Broncos in Week Seven will knock him out for “multiple weeks” and he could be placed on IR.

Savage originally suffered a calf injury in Green Bay’s Week Five loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, and he reportedly re-injured that same calf yesterday in Green Bay’s loss to the Broncos. Savage is one of the stars of Green Bay’s defense, as he registered 58 tackles, an interception, and five passes defensed last season. This year, he has 34 tackles for Green Bay.

Savage was a first-round pick in 2019 out of Maryland, and his loss would be felt in Green Bay’s secondary. If he goes on IR, he’ll have to miss a minimum of four games. His replacement would be Jonathan Owens, a former member of the Houston Texans who has eight tackles this season. As a member of the Texans last season, Owens racked up 125 tackles and four passes defensed in 17 starts.

Green Bay will already be without star offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, as his knee injury will cause him to miss the Steelers game. The Packers are just 2-4 in their first season with QB Jordan Love as the full-time starter, as longtime starter Aaron Rodgers was sent to the New York Jets in a trade this offseason.

The Packers are coming off a 19-17 loss on the road against Denver. Their two wins this season have come against the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints.
