Injury Roundup: Cole Holcomb Still Dealing With Ankle Injury, Anthony McFarland Jr. Monitored

Cole Holcomb

During his Tuesday press conference, Mike Tomlin outlined the Pittsburgh Steelers’ injury situation heading into their Week Eight game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. LB Cole Holcomb is still dealing with the ankle injury he suffered in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. He went down in the middle of the game and was looked at by trainers before walking off the field. He later returned to the game though did not see a lot of action in the fourth quarter as LB Kwon Alexander seemed to take over.

Per Tomlin via the team’s YouTube channel, Holcomb may be limited early in the week and the team will monitor his status over the next several days.

Tomlin also said the team continues to look at RB Anthony McFarland Jr., who returned to practice last Monday after being placed on IR with a knee injury following the team’s Week One loss to the San Francisco 49ers. McFarland’s 21-day window to return opened last week but the team opted against activating him off IR for Sunday’s game, only activating WR Diontae Johnson.

McFarland was a full participant at practice last week so he seems close to a return. If and when he’s activated, he’s most likely to take the spot of RB Godwin Igwebuike, who served as the team’s kick returner against the Rams.

Overall, the Steelers seem to be a healthy team heading into Week Eight though in addition to McFarland, DL Cam Heyward and TE Pat Freiermuth are on injured reserve. Tomlin added he had no update on Heyward’s status, who has been out since injuring his groin in Week One.

The Steelers and Jaguars kick off Sunday at 1 PM/EST.
