2023 NFL Draft

Though No Mike Tomlin Or Omar Khan, Steelers Well-Attended At Pitt Pro Day

Possibly still tied up at the annual league meetings, neither Mike Tomlin nor Omar Khan were spotted at the Pitt Panthers’ Wednesday Pro Day. But the Steelers were well-represented there, something that comes as little surprise given the fact the two share facilities.

By our count at Steelers Depot, the following members of the organization were on-hand today.

Coaches

WRs Coach Frisman Jackson
RBs Coach Eddie Faulkner
Offensive Quality Control Coach Matt Tomsho
DBs Coach Grady Brown

Scouts/Front Office Personnel

Director of Pro Scouting Sheldon White
Assistant Director of Pro Scouting Dave Petett

During the workout, Faulkner put Izzy Abanikanda through drills. He had a strong showing with a 41 inch vertical, 10’8″ broad, and he was timed somewhere in the 4.3’s. At 217 pounds, they are eye-popping numbers.

Pitt LB SirVocea Dennis also dazzled with a 41.5 inch vertical. Coming off a solid Senior Bowl showing, he’s helped improve his stock throughout the pre-draft process.

The top Panthers’ prospect this season is DT Calijeh Kancey. Drawing Aaron Donald comparisons for his relative lack of size but rare athleticism, he reportedly looked fluid in drills and in his testing. He’s a potential first-round pick but a niche scheme fit who best fits in a 4-3, one-gapping system and isn’t a good candidate to stay in Pittsburgh and land with the Steelers.

Other notable Panthers at today’s Pro Day include EDGE Habakkuk Baldonado and OT Carter Warren. Over Mike Tomlin’s tenure, the Steelers have only drafted a pair of Panthers – RB James Conner in 2017 and QB Kenny Pickett in 2022.

Be sure to follow along our Pro Day tracker to see where the rest of the Steelers’ scouting staff is at today and throughout draft season. In addition to those we’ve spotted at Pitt, we’ve also seen area scouts Mark Gorscak and Mike Butler at LSU and Maryland, respectively.

And be sure to check out our profiles on these Pitt Panthers below.
