In a fully expected move, the Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing their decision-makers to Athens, Ga. Wednesday morning. According to ESPN’s Jordan Reid, GM Omar Khan is attending the Georgia Bulldogs’ Pro Day set for later today.
As always, the Bulldogs’ workout is heavily attended by the NFL’s biggest names. Presumably, Mike Tomlin has made the trip too. Yesterday, Khan, Tomlin, and a slew of Steelers’ scouts and coaches went to the Clemson Pro Day, with the Steelers holding a dinner the night before with some of the Tigers’ top prospects.
UPDATE (9:26 AM): Tomlin is at Georgia with Khan.
Special teams coordinator Danny Smith is also at Georgia.
Steelers’ DC Teryl Austin has also made the trip from Clemson to Georgia.
It may be a similar story in Georgia where there is certainly no shortage of talent. DL Jalen Carter is projected to be the school’s top pick in the draft, though his recent arrest warrant and the strength of this QB class – Carolina is now picking at No. 1 – leaves unanswered questions and may push him down the board a little bit. OT Broderick Jones is one of the top tackles in this class while TE Darnell Washington is one of its most unique players, a heavy-handed blocker with off-the-charts testing. CB Kelee Ringo has seen his stock fall but the Steelers still have interest — they are reportedly bringing him in for a pre-draft visit — while EDGE Nolan Smith had one of the best Combine workouts ever. Later round players like S Christopher Smith II and QB Stetson Bennett are also worth mentioning.
In addition to Khan and presumably Tomlin (we’ll update this post once he’s officially spotted) the team likely has several of the personnel who attended Clemson also making the trip to Georgia. That could include DC Teryl Austin and front-office members like Dan Colbert and Dan Rooney Jr.
Michigan State, Minnesota, UCLA, and several other schools are also holding their Pro Day workouts Wednesday so it’ll be a busy day for the Steelers’ scouting team. Which makes a busy day for us.
