AFC North Week 2 Recap: Ravens, Browns Winners; Bengals, Steelers Remain Winless

Week 3 of the 2019 NFL regular season is now upon us and the (0-2) Pittsburgh Steelers enter it tied for last in the AFC North division with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Cleveland Browns are in second place with a (1-1) record while the Baltimore Ravens enter Week 3 still undefeated.

The Ravens moved to (2-0) on the season by beating the Arizona Cardinals at home on Sunday 23-17. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson completed 24 of his 37 total pass attempts in Sunday’s win for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson also rushed 16 times for 120 yards against the Cardinals. His two touchdown passes went to tight ends Mark Andrews and Hayden Hurst. Andrews ended the game with eight receptions for 112 yards.

The Ravens defense did their part against the Cardinals as they only allowed the Arizona offense to convert two of their 11 third down opportunities. While rookie Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray did throw for 349 yards on Sunday, the Ravens defense sacked him three times. The Baltimore defense also only allowed 20 yards rushing on Sunday on 11 total attempts.

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker had three field goals in Sunday’s win as well with the longest one being 51-yards.

The Ravens will next play the (2-0) Kansas City Chiefs on the road Sunday.

The Browns got their first win of 2019 regular season Monday night by beating the New York Jets on the road 23-3.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 19 of his 35 total pass attempts against the Jets defense for 325 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His lone scoring toss went to wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., a quick slant that went for 89 yards. Beckham had six receptions for 161 yards Monday night.

Browns running back Nick Chubb carried the football 18 times for 62 yards and a touchdown against the Jets and caught four passes for another 36 yards.

The Browns defense knocked Jets starting quarterback Trevor Siemian out of the Monday night game quickly. Siemian’s replacement, Luke Falk, completed 20 of his 25 total pass attempts for 198 yards against the Browns defense. The Browns defense registered four sacks Monday night with defensive end Myles Garrett getting credit for three of them. The Jets offense only converted two of their 14 total third down opportunities against the Browns defense in addition to only being able to rush for 93 yards.

The (1-1) Browns will next host the (2-0) Los Angeles Rams Sunday night.

The Bengals lost their second game of the 2019 regular season on Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers 41-17.

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton completed 26 of his 42 total pass attempts for 311 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the loss. His two touchdown passes went to tight end Tyler Eifert and wide receiver John Ross while wide receiver Tyler Boyd caught 10 passes from Dalton for 122 yards.

The Bengals offense only managed 25 yards rushing against the 49ers defense and Dalton was sacked four times during the game.

The 49ers offense registered over 500 total yards against the Bengals defense and San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 17 of his 256 total pass attempts in the win for 296 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Bengals cornerback William Jackson III registered the Bengals lone takeaway against the 49ers. The Bengals defense also failed to register a sack in Sunday’s loss.

The Bengals will now look to see if they can get their first win of 2019 on the road Sunday against the (2-0) Buffalo Bills.

As for the Steelers, they’ll also look to notch their first win of 2019 on Sunday and on the road against the 49ers.
