The initial snap counts from the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday night preseason win against the Kansas City Chiefs are now in and they are listed below along with a few observations from each position group. We will verify the counts during our weekly play charting.
Offensive linemen: Rookie guard Fred Johnson (33) and tackle Zach Banner (36) both played second-string Saturday night only this time at left guard and left tackle, respectively. Chukwuma Okorafor (37) started on the right side with Matt Feiler (30) inside him at right guard. Alejandro Vilanueva and Ramon Foster both started and played 30 total snaps. The second-team offensive line from left to right was Banner, Johnson, Morris, B.J. Finney and Okorafor.
Wide receivers: Rookie Diontae Johnson (45) made his debut Saturday night and went on to log the most offensive snaps. Donte Moncrief also made his Steelers debut but only played 8 total snaps. The top three snap-getters at the wide receiver position against the Chiefs were Johnson (45), James Washington (34) and Eli Rogers (17).
Running backs: James Conner (15) started and he was relieved by Jaylen Samuels (9) and then by Benny Snell Jr. (20) and Trey Edmunds (9).
Tight ends: Christian Scotland-Williamson (0) and rookie Zach Gentry (0) both did not play but Vance McDonald (15) did start with Xavier Grimble (29) first serving as the No. 2 tight end. Kevin Rader (32) played the most but did have two holding penalties.
Quarterbacks: Fourth-stringer Devlin Hodges not only got to play again Saturday night, he logged another 13 snaps The rotation against the Chiefs went as advertised with Mason Rudolph (30) and Joshua Dobbs (23) being followed by Hodges.
Defensive linemen: Tyson Alualu (21) led the way in total snaps and rookie draft pick Isaiah Buggs (20) wasn’t far behind him. Henry Mondeaux (17) also continued to get a long look and he’s now on track to make the practice squad. Lavon Hooks (8) seems to be fading fast after spending last season on the Steelers practice squad. Starters Cameron Heyward (12) and Stephon Tuitt (10) both got their work in in the first quarter as did Javon Hargrave (15).
Inside linebackers: Rookie first-round pick Devin Bush (0) sat out Saturday night with a shoulder injury and Vince Williams (0) also remained sidelined. The starters Saturday night were Mark Barron (12) and Tyler Matakevich (48) with Ulysees Gilbert III (41) relieving the former. Mopping up were Robert Spillane (25) and Tegray Scales (9).
Outside linebackers: Olasunkanmi Adeniyi (0) and Sutton Smith (0) both sat out with injuries so after T.J. Watt (36) and Bud Dupree (36) both exited, Anthony Chickillo (21) and Tuzar Skipper (39) took over. Newcomer Christian Kuntz (18) even played some with Chickillo leaving the game with a chest injury.
Cornerbacks: Starting Saturday night were Steven Nelson (12) and Artie Burns (48) on the outside with Mike Hilton (40) in the slot. Justin Layne (27) fell back some in the rotation Saturday night while Brian Allen (35), like Burns, logged his first preseason snaps of 2019 Saturday night. Cameron Sutton (45) played quite a bit again as well. Hilton also played some at safety against the Chiefs.
Safeties: Kameron Kelly (20) relieved Sean Davis (35), who made his 2019 preseason debut Saturday night alongside Terrell Edmunds (12), who was quickly relieved by Jordan Dangerfield (41). Second-year safety Marcus Allen (19) logged less snaps than P.J. Locke (22) did.
Special teams: Tuzar Skipper only playing 3 special team snaps Saturday night is worth noting with him not logging any in the preseason opener. Keep an eye on Trey Edmunds (10) as well because special teams coordinator Danny Smith sure seems to like him.
