The Pittsburgh Steelers made 9 selections during the 2019 NFL Draft and have since also came to terms with 11 undrafted free agents so far. Those 20 players, along with several other invited tryout players, and others already under contract who are qualified, will now get ready to participate in the team’s annual rookie mini-camp. On Monday, the Steelers announced they will hold their 2019 rookie mini-camp from May 10-12 at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
In total, the Steelers figure to have around 50 to 60 players at this year’s rookie mini-camp. Most of those players will be true signed rookies or rookie tryout players with the other portion of players being made up of first-year players who qualify to participate. That three-day rookie mini-camp will include players participating in helmet and shorts but no pads. Additionally, no hitting can occur during the practices.
Last season, the Steelers signed a few players to their roster who had participated in the team’s rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis. One of those players, guard R.J. Prince, went to spend his entire rookie season on the Steelers practice squad.
Monday started Phase Two of the Steelers offseason program and those session can include on-field workouts and instructional drills but no contact. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills is permitted during this phase which runs for the next three weeks.
The Steelers OTA workouts will begin take place this year on May 21-23, May 28-30, and June 3-6. The team’s mandatory mini-camp will take place on June 11-13.
