If Tyler Murphy is going to serve as the backup quarterback to Landry Jones on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team will need to promote him from their practice squad to their 53-man roster by 4 p.m. EST on Saturday. If and when that move is made, someone will need to be released/waived to make room for him.
As usual, the list of candidates to be released/waived is a short one and here they are in no particular order.
Byron Stingily – The former Tennessee Titans tackle was signed to the roster on Monday to replace starting tackle Kelvin Beachum, who was placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a torn ACL. Being as fellow offensive lineman Chris Hubbard took reps at tackle this week in practice, he might very well be asked to serve as the backup swing tackle to starters Alejandro Villanueva and Marcus Gilbert on Sunday. It’s doubtful that another team would sign Stingily over the weekend.
Anthony Chickillo – Chickillo was promoted to the team’s 53 man roster a few weeks ago and he did dress this past Sunday with Jarvis Jones sidelined with a hip injury. If he’s the choice, he will be exposed to waivers. The team obviously likes him and even though the transaction will take place on a Saturday, there’s still a level of risk involved in losing him being as so many teams are already looking forward to 2016.
Jordan Todman – While I don’t think that Todman will be the choice, he does have to be considered a candidate just the same. He’s a core special teams player and third-string running back, however, and that helps improve his chancres of sticking around.
Mike Vick – Vick was ruled out on Friday with a hamstring injury and when you add to that the fact that he’s been very unimpressive over the course of the last several weeks, he has to be at least mentioned on this list. Vick’s 2015 salary is guaranteed, however, as a vested veteran, so that needs to be factored into his situation as well.
If pressed for a guess, I would say that Stingily stands the best chance of being the odd man out on Saturday.
