July 8th is a very important day in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers as it can actually be referred to as the birthday of the organization.
The Steelers, who are the fifth-oldest franchise in the NFL, were founded on July 8, 1933 by Arthur Joseph Rooney. Originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates, they were a member of the Eastern Division of the 10-team NFL.
Rooney, who was affectionately referred to as “The Chief”, originally purchased the team for $2,500. He changed the name of the team to the Steelers in 1940.
Rooney won his first of four Super Bowl championships in 1974. He passed away August 25, 1988, at age of 87.
