The Pittsburgh Steelers will report to Latrobe for training camp on Friday, so I thought we would continue to spend these last several days talking about a few players that many believe will have a decent shot at making the final 53 man roster. Basically, these are players that we can’t quite consider locks, but do consider as being on the bubble.
After reading the recap of the player that we highlight, you can cast your vote as to whether or not you think that player will make the final 53 man roster. Each poll will run for three days.
The eleventh player up in this series is third-year nose tackle Hebron Fangupo.
2013 Season Recap:
Fangupo, who was originally signed off of waivers from the Seattle Seahawks by the Steelers in December of 2012, made the final 53 man roster out of training camp last season after beating out former fourth-round draft pick Alameda Ta’amu in training camp. However, despite making the roster, Fangupo only dressed for six games last season as Al Woods was the primary backup to starting nose tackle Steve McLendon on the defensive line. The Brigham Young product played all of 13 snaps on defense in 2013 and was credited with one assisted tackle.
2014 Outlook:
After losing Woods to the Tennessee Titans during the offseason, the Steelers signed San Diego Chargers free agent defensive lineman Cam Thomas to presumably fill his role. As of right now, Thomas is slated to be one of the Steelers two starting defensive ends and he will presumably also back up McLendon at the nose tackle position. Being as the Steelers will more than likely want to keep one more big-bodied defensive tackle on their 53 man roster this year, Fangupo will have to beat out rookie sixth-round draft pick Daniel McCullers for that spot during training camp. McCullers is very raw, however, so Fangupo’s experience and knowledge of the defense likely gives him the upper hand in that battle as the team heads into Latrobe.
